Life Education - Building Relationships - Information on the Keeping us Safe Programme

On Tuesday we attended the Life Education Bus and met with Katie and Harold.

We talked a lot about whether we are reactive = Red, yellow or Blue zone or responsive.

We looked at what the following terms meant:

Rude - is when you react inappropriately (like a burp) or say something that is disrespectful but unintentional.

Mean - You intentionally hurt someone with your behaviour. Like someone telling you 'you are ugly' this is one-off.

Bully - When you are trying to gain power, by making others feel bad with repeated behaviour. Cyberbullying, emotional bullying is what we see at school and on the internet.

Assault - Is when you use violence this can be one-off or bulling. Assault isn't ok.

Namaste and welcome back to the commencement of Term 3 2021.

I hope all children enjoyed a lovely deserved break from school and are prepared for another term of important learning. Please if you are competing in the Mrs. Dinniss Reading Log bring it in before Wednesday.

It is a good time for a reminder that the world is still in the midst of a serious pandemic and that we should feel privileged to live in a country with no community transmission. We will be reminding children to still take basic health precautions like washing hands regularly, using hand sanitizer, tissues and coughing or sneezing into the inside of elbows. We ask you to reinforce this message at home as well and to please keep your child home if they are sick.

Life Education begins at St Mary's on Monday, featuring Katie and of course Harold the Giraffe. All Kahikatea Middle School classes will have an opportunity to visit the Life Education van for lessons around the building of relationships. You may wish to ask your child about what they have been learning in Life Education.

Reports are due to go home this Friday the 30th of July. The 3-way conferences, between parents, teachers and children are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 2 (next week). Bookings will be possible soon. There will be 10-minute slots available until 6.00pm on each day. This week will be reflection week for our students. A reflection sheet for parents, where you will be able to rate your child against key competencies, will be sent home with the reports. Parents are kindly asked to send these sheets back to school on the Monday prior to the interviews.

On Thursday, at 12.15pm, we will have our first Liturgy for the term and it has a Matariki theme. All parents and caregivers are welcome. Please make sure that you are in the hall by 12.10 pm.

The children learned about Meditation Prayer last term from two Catholic sisters. Classes school wide will be meditating each day starting this term for 10 minutes from 12:30pm. Meditative Prayer has a very calming effect on children.

Room 13 (the upstairs room in the hall) has been transformed into our Learning Support space and it does look excellent.

PTA AGM The PTA AGM is scheduled for  7pm Wednesday 28 July - first week back Term Three - in the school staffroom. All are welcome to attend. There will be drinks and nibbles provided!!

Please come into the school via the Carnot Street gate and enter the building through the student entrance alongside the school office.

Have a great week.
